There are 27 books in the New Testament, written by various authors, the most prolific of which was Paul.

The New Testament contains:

  • Four biographies of Jesus, called the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), which document Jesus’ life and teaching from different perspectives and for different audiences.
  • The book of Acts covers the history of the early church and was written by Dr. Luke.
  • Twenty-one books are letters (called epistles) written by key followers of Jesus to various churches, groups, or people.
  • The concluding book is Revelation, known for its vivid end-time prophecy.

For more specific information about the books of the Bible, see the overview of books in the Bible. Also, check out our Bible dictionary for keys words, phrases, and names of Bible characters.

A lifelong student of the Bible, Peter DeHaan, PhD, wrote the 1,000-page website to encourage people to explore the Bible. His main blog and many books urge Christians to push past the status quo and reconsider how they practice their faith in every area of their lives.
