Bible Term: Idolatry

idolatry

Idolatry is literally the worship of an idol, a man-made image for a false god.

Figuratively, idolatry is a devotion to anything or anyone other than God. This can include the worship or idolizing of nature, people, material things, even leisure and a life of ease.

Key verse about Idolatry: Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry Colossians 3:5, NIV).

A lifelong student of the Bible, Peter DeHaan, PhD, wrote the 1,000-page website ABibleADay.com to encourage people to explore the Bible. His main blog and many books urge Christians to push past the status quo and reconsider how they practice their faith in every area of their lives.
