Bible Term: Sanctification

Sanctification is to be set apart, refined, or made holy.

Whereas consecration is something that God commands his people to do, sanctification is something that God does in us. He sets us apart and makes us holy. We can’t sanctify ourselves; God does.

Sanctification is a process that is set in motion when we follow Jesus.

See sanctify, which is a synonym for consecrate.

Key verse about sanctification: “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality (1 Thessalonians 4:3, NKJV).

A lifelong student of the Bible, Peter DeHaan, PhD, wrote the 1,000-page website ABibleADay.com to encourage people to explore the Bible. His main blog and many books urge Christians to push past the status quo and reconsider how they practice their faith in every area of their lives.
