Tithe:

A tithe is a practice originating from the Old Testament in which one tenth or ten percent is given to God; this was a matter of law and therefore a requirement.

God, however, doesn't appreciate tithes that are given legalistically or with a obligatory attitude, but desires tithes and offerings that are given freely and out of love and gratitude.

Today some people maintain the concept of a tithe as presented in the Old Testament, whereas others feel that this changed with Jesus (as did much else) viewing a tithe more as a principle, guideline, or concept, than a rigid requirement.

Also, it is often stated that a tithe should go to the local church, but a more correct rendering would be that a tithe goes to God, be it through a local church or by some other means.
