The Book of First JohnThe book of 1 John was written by Jesus' disciple John, who also wrote the gospel of John. As such there are many similarities between the two books. (He is also the author of 2 John, 3 John, and Revelation.) First John is written more as a sermon than a letter. It's purpose is to reassure the followers of Jesus of their eternal standing with him (1 John 5:13). In reading this book, look for the reoccurring theme of love, which is mentioned 24 times. Other repeated words to pay attention to are hates (5 times), truth (11 times), spirit (8 times), liar (5 times), and fellowship (3 times).
